The eccentric upper middle class Smith family and their four housemates are the subject of the television show, which is set in a fictitious version of Langley, Virginia. Stan, the Republican breadwinner, father, husband, and CIA agent; Francine, his wife and homemaker; Hayley, their leftist, hippy, college-age daughter; and Steve, their nerdy, high-school-aged son. Jeff Fischer, Hayley's then-boyfriend and future husband, the family's unusual goldfish Klaus, who has the intelligence of an East German athlete, Roger the alien, a flamboyant, hedonistic, self-serving master of disguise, and Rogu, Roger's former tumor son, are the other four main characters. The Central Intelligence Agency's Deputy Director and Stan's employer, Avery Bullock, is a recurring character.
