Sixth grader Toppa Bashin is an enthusiastic thrill-seeker who has his sights set solely on the card game Battle Spirits. To the dismay of his peers, Bashin arrives at school every day wearing a ruby pendant that belonged to his father, who is missing. Bashin is excited about card battles more than academics. A similar pendant is worn by J, the Battle Spirits champion young genius, who Bashin runs across one day. Bashin challenges J to a duel because he is star-struck. He was not prepared for the fight he ends up having, as the two are transported to the Isekai World, a mystical arena in the sky where Spirits from the game come to life. Bashin plunges into the Isekai World, feeling as though his dream is finally within reach, and runs into other card fighters who are wearing remarkable pendants. He gradually comes to the realization that Battle Spirits are more complex than he had initially thought as he advances to the top.
