PLOT
The narrative centers on Mitsuo Suwa, a young child who meets an alien named Superman, later known as Birdman. The extraterrestrial recruits Mitsuo to join a group that upholds galactic harmony and is a Perman. Three objects are handed to Mitsuo: a cape that can fly and run very quickly; a helmet that increases physical strength and doubles as a mask; and a badge that allows underwater breathing and communication with Permans, which he later encounters. The alien warns Mitsuo that if a Perman's identity is discovered by others, his brain would be destroyed, though in later chapters this is limited to being transformed into an animal. The alien will give Mitsuo a copy-robot, a robot that can stand in for him when he is Perman, to enable him maintain his covert identity.
