Natsume discovers that the heirloom 'Book of Friends' that his grandmother, Reiko, gave him possesses the names of the spirits she defeated and bound to her will. Assisted by a spirit in the form of a Maneki Neko (lucky cat figure), whom he calls Nyanko-Sensei, Natsume decides to return all the names to their original owners.
