It's Christmas Eve, but Emily can't attend the New Moon party with all of her visiting relatives and friends. She is in fact in her room in detention for disobeying Aunt Elisabeth, but she considers the punishment too severe because her aunt treated her just like a stranger. However, when the guests, having discovered the thing, begin to criticize Elisabeth for her severity, the woman orders them not to criticize the education she wants to impart to her niece, because it is something that only concerns the Murrays: this finally makes it clear to Emily with pride to be part of the family.
